Wang Guang Yi

Wang Guangyi, a native of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, was born in 1957. He graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (NZAFA) in 1984 and was active during the Shanghai Modern Movement of the 80s where he was regarded as the political pop icon of the late 1980s. He also participated in the China Avant-Garde Exhibition in 1989. As politically and socially engaging Wang's painting are, he continues to evoke the message of materiality inducing apathy of the people in China as well as the world. He now resides in Beijing. 

He participated in the China Avant-Garde Exhibition in 1989. 
 
In 1990, he participated in the group exhibition at Pacific Asia Museum, California, USA.  
 
In 1992, he attended "The First 1990's Biennial Art Fair" in Guangzhou, China. He also participated in the "China, Avant-Garde" at Haus der Kulturen der welt in Berlin, Germany. 
 
In 1993, he held his 1st solo exhibition at Gallery Bellefroid Paris, France. He also attended "China, Avant-Garde" at Kunsthal Rotterdam, Holland and the one at Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, England. Moreover, he participated in the 45th International Biennial of Venice, Italy, "China's New Art Post-1989" at Hong Kong Art Centre and "Mao Goes Pop" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia.  
 
In 1994, he participated in the 22nd International Biennial of Sao Paulo, Brazil and "600 Seoul International Art Festival" at National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea. 
 
In 1995, he attended "Art to Swatch" at the Museum of Architecture and Design, The Chicago Athemnaeum, USA and "APERTO 95" at Santa Monica Art Centre, Barcelona, Spain. 
 
In 1996, he attended the group exhibition "China" at Kunst Museum in Bonn, Germany and the "Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art" at Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia.  
 
In 1997, he held his solo show at Littmann Kulturprojekte, Basel, Switzerland. Also, he participated in the group show "China" at Kuenstlerhaus, Wien, Austria and "Quotation Marks" at Modern Art Museum, Sigapore.  
In 1999, he participated in the "Inside Out" exhibition at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, USA. 
 
In 2000, he was invited at the "20th Century Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition" at National Art Gallery in Beijing, China.  
 
In 2001, his solo exhibition "Faces of Faith" was held at Soobin Art Gallery, Singapore. He also attended "Polypolis" at Kunsthaus Hamburg, Germany and the "Next Generation Art Contemporain D'Asie" at Passage de retz Paris, France. 
 
In 2002, he participated in "Chinese Modernity" at Fondacion Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) Sao Paulo, Brazil and "Paris-Beijing" at Espace Cardin Paris, France. He also attended "Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art" at Shenzhen Museum of Art, "Guangzhou Triennial" at Guangdong Museum of Art and ''The Strength of Picture" at Museum He Xiangning in Shenzhen, China. 
 
In 2003, he participated in "Paris-Pékin" at Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris, France 
 
In 2004, his works were exhibited in "Chine, le corps partout?", Museum of Contemporary Art, Marseilles, France. 
 
In 2005, he attended "Mahjong", Kunstmuseum, Bern, Switzerland. 
 
In 2006, he held "Wang Guangyi", Galerie ARARIO, Seoul, Korea.
