Wu Guanzhong, born in 1919. His training in western art began at the Hangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 1936 under Lin Fengmian. He graduated in 1942, and took up a teaching position at the Ministry of Education. He then traveled to France and during the next four years studied oil painting. After returning to China in 1950, he taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Qinghua University and Beijing Arts Institute. Currently, he is a professor at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. In June 1989, he attended the exhibition "Wu Guanzhong : A Contemporary Chinese Artist" at San Francisco organized by Chinese Culture Foundation of San Francisco. In March to May, 1992, he attended the exhibition "Wu Guanzhong, A Twentieth-Century Chinese Painter" organized by the British Museum in London. This is the first Chinese artist's exhibition to be organised by the British Museum. The British Broadcasting Corporation interviewed Wu and filmed a special feature for the occasion. In March 1998, he was invited to participate in and attend the opening of the exhibition "Works by Teachers and Students of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Crafts" organized by the Paris International Art City. In November 1999, the exhibition "Wu Guanzhong's Art in 1999" at the China Fine Arts Museum presented by the Cultural Bureau of the People's Republic of China. In June 2000, Guangdong People's Publishing House published a collection of essays "The Beauty of Painting and Literature by Wu Guanzhong". In June, 2001 he hosted with Professor Li Zhengdao the large-scale exhibition "Art and Science" at the China Fine Arts Museum. In March 2002, he visited Hong Kong to attend the opening of the exhibition "Wu Guanzhong: A Retrospective" organized by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. |
